It is a manual device used in ophthalmology used to measure the graduation of the eye through a technique called retinoscopy. This technique works by pointing light focused on the pupil which is then projected on the retina, the optician-optometrist observes through an eyepiece of the retinoscope, the shadow that that strip of light makes at the back of the eye.
