Retinal Cameras Market size was estimated at $xx Million in 2020 and is expected to reach $xx Million by 2027, growing at a CAGR of 11.25% during the forecast period of 2020 to 2027.

Market Definition / Research Scope

A retinal camera is an ophthalmology instrument with a lens and lighting system used to view and photograph the optic nerve and the retina, it is used in the fundus study that consists of visualizing the posterior pole of the eyeball. Through a retinal camera photograph, ophthalmologists can observe diverse pathologies or injuries on the most important part of the eye.
The cameras specialized in capturing the fundus, combine a series of filters and in combination with the administration of contrast media where highly specific images can be obtained.
There are two types of ophthalmic cameras for capturing the fundus: mydriatic cameras (they capture images of the fundus and retina after the patients pupil has been dilated, allowing a larger area of the retina to be imaged in greater detail) and non-mydriatic (they show an image of the fundus and the retina without the need for mydriasis), although nowadays hybrid cameras are beginning to emerge where these last two types of cameras are fused.

Retinal Cameras Market Growth and Trends

In 2015, the global retinal camera market was estimated at USD 347.6 million and is expected to increase by the end of 2025 with a CAGR of 6.8%. High growth is attributed to the continuous growth of age degeneration related macular (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR), and glaucoma cases. The increase in the geriatric population and the increase in chronic disorders such as diabetes and blood hypertension, further increase the incidence of retinal disorders.

For example, according to the National Eye Institute (NEI) from the USA, from 2010 to 2050, the number of patients with diabetic retinopathy in the United States is expected to double from 7.7 million to 14.6 million.

Also by the end of 2025, the retinal camera segment will have an increase in sales due to its possibility of combining more technologies in a single device. Besides, progress in the field is expected to lead to market growth. For example, since the launch of the first Carl Zeiss retinal camera in 1926, devices have evolved continuously. Today, these devices are easier to use and more reliable for diagnosing vision-threatening diseases.

Thus, the market demand for retinal cameras is growing because it allows the practitioner to see in detail the anatomy of the retina and provides an improved diagnosis and management of eye diseases.

In the buyer segment, the largest market share is represented by ophthalmology and optometrists. At the zonal level, North America has dominated the retinal camera market since 2015, but it is anticipated that in the future, Asia Pacific will be the fastest-growing segment.

Challenges to retinal camera market growth: The global market for products eye care is driven primarily by rising retinal disease rates worldwide and technological advances. However, the market will suffer from strict regulatory frameworks and intellectual property rights laws.
