Mid-infrared Lasers Market
Mid-infrared Lasers are mostly adopted in environmental monitoring and free-space optical communications, due to their power transmission features even under unfavourable weather conditions such as rain, snow, fog, etc.

Their ability to spread over long distances also enables application in the defence industry, as they can be utilized for counter-measuring against heat sinking missiles, targeting illumination and designation, covert and line of sight communications, as well as sensing organic molecular fingerprints.

Furthermore, the remote sensing of Mid-IR Lasers is adopted in spectroscopy for precise and rapid detection of explosives.

The Mid-infrared (IR) Lasers market is projected to exceed US$2.72 billion of revenue in 2031, growing with an 11.4% CAGR for the forecast period of 2022-2031.

As a result of their various applications, laser-spectroscopic systems have experienced increasing demand from laboratories over the past years. Investors have given priority to the chemical, healthcare, and defence industry applications, deemed as essential.

To allow for innovation in those sectors, the spending in R&D has risen. On one hand, scientific applications such as quantum, non-linear optics, and silicon photonics have been introduced and manufacturers have aimed at developing further the hybrid fibre pumped Mid-IR Lasers, which are to be utilized in laser scalpels, inspection applications of non-destructive nature, or non-metal processing.

On the other hand, the production of the Mid-IR Tunable Lasers has been increasing, in order to grow business with gas sensing applications. This particular segment of the Mid-IR lasers is expected to deliver staggering growth, as a result of the growing demand for equipment for metrology inspection, as well as the measurement equipment in manufacturing plants.

Mid-infrared Lasers Market Growth and Trend
Although the Covid-19 crisis left investors with unfavourable attitudes towards spending, which resulted in poor market performance, stakeholders have increased funding of R&D and therefore, contributed to its revival.

Mid-IR lasers are widely applicable. Manufacturers are pouring investment into R&D to develop Solid-state Lasers and take advantage of their applications in healthcare.
Further opportunities for gaining revenue for stakeholders come from its applications in defence. In order to gain a competitive advantage, companies invested in developing hybrid Mid-IR Lasers to allow for applications such as stand-off detection of explosion hazards, IR countermeasures, and covert communications. The remote sensing ability of the hybrid lasers is the driver behind their increasing demand and therefore, manufacturers that have proprietary capabilities have been aiming to secure their availability at low cost.

However, growth may be hampered by the low awareness, which characterizes the Mid-infrared spectral region, as only a few lasers with such wavelength range are commercially available. This presents an opportunity for the introduction of new Mid-range lasers, which could impact science and hence, the healthcare industry. In addition to surgical applications, Mid-range lasers could be adopted in telecommunication, material processing, or other industrial and research practices.

Mid-infrared Lasers Market Segmentation
The Mid-infrared Lasers market is segmented by type, wavelength, and end-use industry.

According to type, the market is divided into Non-linear frequency Mid-IR laser, Solid-state laser, Semiconductor laser, Gas laser, Free electron-based Mid-IR laser, and others.
Based on wavelength, the lasers are categorized as Tunable Mid-IR Lasers, Fixed Mid-IR Lasers, Broadband Mid-IR lasers. Although all of the aforementioned are drivers of industry growth, the Tunable lasers are expected to have the largest contribution, due to their application in metrology and manufacturing.

In terms of the end-use industry, the market is segmented into research, chemical, healthcare, aerospace and defence, and others. All segments are projected to increase revenue significantly in the future. The growing usage of mid-IR lasers for biomedical research and diagnostics is expected to be very attractive, however, the defence segment, and specifically spectroscopy, is projected to expand more than any another for the period between 2022 and 2031.
